His bicycle lay on the ground, the wheels still spinning. He’d been delivering water pipes to homes around Kolkata. A man came up to the boy’s body and lifted his limp head. The boy’s eyes were wide open and he didn’t blink. The man placed his head back on the ground and walked away. The boy was dead.

Because karma is king in this city, the destitute and the dying are left on roadsides to meet their fate. Karma, the good or bad actions a person does, determines their lot and outcome in life.

Karma says the boy deserved his fate.

Christian workers who live in this city of millions say they feel engulfed by darkness and death. They say it’s hard to walk anywhere without coming across someone in their final minutes of life.

There is a promise in the book of Isaiah: a light will shine in the land where death casts its shadow. That “light” is Jesus. His workers in Kolkata share that “Light” every day.

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light—a light that will shine on all who live in the land where death casts its shadow,” Isaiah 9:2 (NLT).

Next week, mReport will be in Kolkata. We’ll experience this “Light” penetrating the darkness of this city. Starting on May 15, check mReport daily for stories, photos and video about workers who’ve moved to Kolkata to spread the Light and men and women who’ve traveled across the Pacific to share about Jesus. Watch for stories about people who are boldly sharing truth in their home culture.

We’ll meet those walking in darkness, as well as those who have come out of the shadows. You will hear stories of children rescued from a life in a train station. You will meet “women of the night” as they find a new profession and discover God’s love.

This is an interactive journey. Partner with us in prayer as you read, watch and listen. Share these stories with your churches, networks and friends.
